Hi.

Welcome to my blog!

🎶Let’s talk about books, baby
Let’s talk about you and me
Let’s talk about all the good things
And the bad things that may be
Let’s talk about books🎶

Ummm...

Ummm...

I think it’s time to get a new model… Or at the very least use a different color background? I’m a huge fan of Gena Showalter’s but I had to point this out because it makes me laugh (and roll my eyes) every time I see these covers. When I first got into Showalter I thought that The Darkest Torment and Burning Dawn had the same main characters- I was so confused for a little bit.

I first discovered the amazing Gena Showalter while wondering the romance section at the bookstore. The Darkest Torment had just come out and the beautiful hardback was on a big display, along with some of her other books. As soon as I realized it was the 12th book in the series I immediately bought the first book and then fell in love. However, in my learning of the world and the series Showalter had created, I seriously thought maybe Darkest Torment was a sequel to Burning Dawn or something. You know what I’m talking about? When covers look similar, right? I swear, I’m not crazy. Anyway, after getting into the series (and loving it) I realized the books were of the same world but completely different and I just shrugged and thought it was a coincidence the covers looked alike. However, when the Frost and Flame cover was revealed, I literally threw up my hands and said, “come on!”. It’s from an entirely different series of Showalter’s and yet, it looks like two of her other books from another series. Seriously, are there no other types of models HQN has? Did the same person make all three of these covers? Is there a secret rule that buff blonde men have to be backdropped by red on book covers? What is going on?

I’m a cover shopper- I hate to admit it, but I am. So, covers really stick out to me- I may not picture the people on the covers while reading the book (because I mostly cast vastly different looking people into the role in my head) but this is the SAME author. Yes, Burning Dawn is “technically” from a spinoff of the Lords of the Underworld series and yes, Frost and Flame is from another series in general but it’s the SAME author. SAME SAME SAME!!!! Gah!

The other main problem with the Lord of the Underworld series, and now her new series Gods of War, is most of the characters are of the SAME race. Yes, Amun (from LOTU) is of Egyptian descent but I believe he’s the only one (don’t quote me- I haven’t done a reread in a long time and I may be sooo wrong but I believe he is the only one). So, I can see running into the problem of having the same model (or a guy that looks like the other guy) when most of your characters are described the same way. Mix it up, it’s not that hard. Especially in a fantasy series, which both of these series are. And LOTU is based on Greek myths, there are a lot of skin colors in the world. And don’t come at me that these myths are Greek and are based on Greek people. I’m Greek. I know what Greek people look like. And let me tell you Greece boarders all kinds of different cultures and countries, where the people were not necessarily blonde and white. You’ve got Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq (seriously, go look at a map). All of these countries influenced each other in many different ways and you know, sex happens and babies happen. So, I don’t even want to hear it. Also, the Gods of War series is based on a fictional myth, which could have contained some people of color… just saying…

The lack of diversity in romance (or any genre really) is just fucking ridiculous. Romance (and other genres) are getting better about it but there is still a looooonnng way to go. Especially, when you give one cover model all the jobs…

-Happy Reading!

P.S. I truly love Gena Showalter’s writing (Click here for a post supporting Showlater- I can do both 😊). She’s one of my favorites and I will probably always read her books. But if you want to get technical these are three different books from three different series all from the same author that look EXACTLY alike. Absurd.
