A Princess in Theory Review
Title: A Princess in Theory (Reluctant Royals, #1)
Author: Alyssa Cole
Publication Date: February 27, 2018
From acclaimed author Alyssa Cole comes the tale of a city Cinderella and her Prince Charming in disguise . . .
Between grad school and multiple jobs, Naledi Smith doesn’t have time for fairy tales…or patience for the constant e-mails claiming she’s betrothed to an African prince. Sure. Right. Delete! As a former foster kid, she’s learned that the only things she can depend on are herself and the scientific method, and a silly e-mail won’t convince her otherwise.
Prince Thabiso is the sole heir to the throne of Thesolo, shouldering the hopes of his parents and his people. At the top of their list? His marriage. Ever dutiful, he tracks down his missing betrothed. When Naledi mistakes the prince for a pauper, Thabiso can’t resist the chance to experience life—and love—without the burden of his crown.
The chemistry between them is instant and irresistible, and flirty friendship quickly evolves into passionate nights. But when the truth is revealed, can a princess in theory become a princess ever after?
I’m so annoyed at myself for waiting so long to finish this book!!! This year I have had really bad book ADD. I’ll start a book and then get distracted by another book. I started A Princess in Theory in January and I just finished it- in October… I suck!
I loved this story so much! This is the first book I’ve read by Cole and I’m addicted! I had just started this book when I went out and bought everything she had written before. Her writing is just so smart and wonderful!
What truly got to me about this book was Ledi calling Thabiso on his behavior. The troupe of stalking is addressed multiple times and is shown, you know, to be creepy, like it is in real life. I loved that it was pointed out and talked about. All the romance troupes that are a little, shall we say problematic, are completely called out! LOVE IT!!!
What I really enjoyed about Thabiso was the fact that he started off as an entitled prince but learned how to be an actual human being just by seeing Ledi struggle. She challenged him in ways he had never been challenged before. His turn around was so heartbreakingly sweet!
However, Ledi was the star of the show for me. Having Ledi be a smart independent woman was my favorite part of this book. Mostly because it wasn’t talked about constantly- it was shown through how she acted and carried herself. Personally, I am not a STEM person at all- math and science are Greek to me but I loved that part of her character. Her battle, not only with being on her own, but with sexism in the work place was something that really endeared her to me. These things happen every day and are usually ignored or swept under the rug. They way Ledi is able to learn to fight for herself makes her a female lead that is more than just a character. Her struggle with everyday challenges plus her struggle with life and her past in general made her this perfectly flawed woman who everyone can relate to in some fashion and also admire. She is probably one of my favorite female characters I have ever read.
I loved that the ending wasn’t a cookie cutter ending. It had a different way about it that I completely fell for. Ledi and Thabiso took their two completely different worlds and combined them together. I really enjoyed that they were figuring their relationship out first and getting to enjoy each other.
Cole is able to bring her characters to life in a way that makes you, as the reader, feel like they are real people. Cole’s writing is so realistic and wonderful, I’m so annoyed with myself for reading it so slowly. I have so many passages marked in my book I doubt I will able to loan it out to anyone else to read… I just couldn’t help myself.
This book was funny, sexy, clever, and real! Don’t be like me and wait to read it. Read it now! Like right now! Cole has cemented her place on my auto-buy list for life. I’ve already started the next book in this series A Duke By Default and I am of course loving it! I can tell you right now that this series will be a favorite of mine for many years to come. I already can’t wait for the third book! I won’t be making the mistake again of reading this series slowly. And neither should you!
Also, did you see that cover!?!?!?! The dresses on covers of this series are so eye-catchingly beautiful. LOVE IT!!!!❤️❤️❤️
