I’m not one to get into trends or fads. It probably has to do with my rebel without a clue mindset… I swear I was born 40. 😊
However, book trends are something I keep a close eye on and notice very quickly. I especially love to follow book cover trends (mostly because I am a cover shopper). It is always surprising to me what becomes popular to put on a cover. One of my all time favorite book cover trend was the-random-objects-photographed-in-a-beautiful-light-that-really-had-nothing-to-do-with-what-the-book-was-about-but-was-ascetically-pleasing trend. For example, flowers. There are a few series that just have a pretty flower on the cover. No reason for them. They are just pretty and eye catching. Or jewelry. Or random items of clothing. You get where I’m going with this. Sometimes trends make sense and sometimes they don’t but they almost always work or else they wouldn’t be trends. Right?
In the last few months I have noticed a new trend in my ARC pile- cartoony like covers. This trend hasn’t just stayed in romance though. I’ve noticed it in fiction a lot as well. Which is what peeked my interest in the first place. It’s not common that romance trends spread to other genres.
At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about these type of covers. They were quirky and kind of fun but I didn’t really see the draw. However, they have grown on me. I like them because they are unique. I find that sometimes there just aren’t enough covers to go around, which causes the whole Who Wore It Better concept. There are only so many stock photos out there.
But these simple cartoon like covers have so many possibilities. They have this sort of abstract simplicity about them that just draws the eye. At least for me.
Do you like this new trend? Is there another trend that you love or hate? What is it and why?
